The Power of the Internet
In the 21st century, technology has been substantially on the rise. When the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the world in 2020, lockdowns and strict quarantine implementations were instituted to ensure safety and protect the people from the spread of the deadly disease. Physical distancing, wearing of face masks, and mass vaccinations were also implemented to further secure the health of the population.
Because of these, people were locked indoors, even strictly for quite some time. Along with this was a drastic shift in consumer behavior. Business transactions were shifting from the traditional brick-and-mortar mode towards the digital world. As the markets get more competitive each passing day, businesses had to adapt online for most of them to stay afloat.
One interesting field in terms of business operations is marketing. And if I were to choose one field in information technology to pursue as my career, I’d choose to either be a social media marketing specialist or a web analytics expert.
I’ve been working as a social media manager for a local brand for almost a year now. I also take in small writing gigs that incorporate a bit of SEO, so the world of IT is not that much of a foreign field for me. Becoming a social media marketing specialist is in line with the current technical and creative skills that I have been honing for the past year. And it’s a field that I find interesting (both positively and negatively) since it can influence consumer behavior.
Social media has become a powerful tool. Just two days ago, I read an article about how the Marcoses have been utilizing the use of social media over the past years to ‘rebrand’ their family and revise history. It was found out that the ‘heads’ of the ‘trolls’ are marketing specialists and PR practitioners. This is something that we need to be wary of. And it’s equally important that we combat these destructive ad campaigns that sway and influence the public to see fascists and as humane and pro-people beings. All for the sake of money. And IT is indeed a lucrative source of income. Both for the wrong and right reasons.
Marketing specialists and web analytics are two branches of IT that do not stray too far from each other. I believe that pursuing either of these careers will further fuel my drive to learn more about and experiment with various strategies and find the right ‘blend’ to employ when it comes to marketing products, services, and even people over the internet.
